Prof Umar Garba Danbatta
Executive Vice Chairman, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC)
Professor Umar Garba Danbatta is the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
He earned his BEng, and MSc degrees from the Technical University of Wroclaw in Poland and received his PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
Prior to his appointment as the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Professor Danbatta served as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Technology of Bayero University Kano for 28 years, where he taught courses in telecommunications engineering and electronics and held academic positions of Dean of the Faculty and Head of Department.
He was also the Vice President of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) an International Centre for Advanced Communications Studies, which was established by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to build capacity for the Nigerian/African telecom industry in diverse areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). A recipient of multiple awards, Prof. Danbatta is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (FAEng), a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and a Fellow of the Renewable and Alternative Energy Society (FRAES).
Since his appointment as the NCC’s CEO, Prof Danbatta has succeeded in tremendously transforming the telecom sector in Nigeria, especially in the areas of infrastructural development, consumer empowerment and satisfaction, research and development, improved stakeholder relation, and a significant increase in active mobile broadband penetration.
